Inkjet Cartridge Franchises
Posted Under: Comments on Franchisors, Entrepreneurial
I think it was around 1992 when, interested in business opportunities even then, I called a number in response to an advertisement I had seen in a local newspaper. The opportunity was an ink cartridge re-filling business. The person who owned the business was an 18 year old boy. Why was he selling? He was going to university next year and he needed to devote himself full time to his studies. Still interested, I asked what his annual turnover was. A slight pause, umm.. around $2,000, another pause… yep, about that.
Not really enough for you to give up your day job. Still, I wondered what the long term potential might be. It was hard to know back then. Inkjet printers hadn’t been around for long but the Ink cartridges were, and still are expensive. So I kept my day job but also kept a slight interest in watching the the ink jet cartridge business blossom.
The other event I remember about it was an article in a national newspaper. It was about an accountant who had been hired to investigate an inkjet cartridge franchise. His client was considering purchasing a franchise and wanted a professional to do a complete study first.
Now there is a lesson for would-be franchisees I thought to myself. Hire a professional instead of relying on gut feel. The accountant’s client decided that he wouldn’t go ahead with purchasing a franchise. Who knows what his reason was. But his accountant thought it was too good an opportunity to pass up and so purchased the franchise for himself.
The point of the newspaper article reporting this story was describe how successful he had become. He was doing V-E-R-Y well indeed, thank you very much.
Did you ever wonder how many ink cartridges have ever been made. Well, to tell you the truth nor had I but consider this excerpt from an out of date report:
“PALO ALTO, CA, January 30, 2008 –/WORLD-WIRE/– In an industry first, HP today announced it has developed an engineering breakthrough that enables the use of post-consumer recycled plastics in the production of new Original HP inkjet print cartridges.
More than 200 million cartridges have been manufactured using the process thus far. HP used more than 5 million pounds of recycled plastic in its inkjet cartridges last year, and the company is committed to using twice as much in 2008.”
Kind of leaves you gasping for air, doesn’t it?
Anyway, the inkjet cartridge business is now a mature and very successful one. There are many franchise business opportunities selling new ones, recycled ones and both.
INKMART is one such company and at the moment they are actively looking for people interested in taking on an Area Developer franchise.
